Member for Swan, Zaneta Mascarenhas MP encourages the community to get on board to eliminate single use plastic for the month of July.

Local MP and Member of the Federal Parliament Standing Committee on Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water Zaneta Mascarenhas has invited members of the local community to join her to eliminate single-use plastic as part of the Plastic Free July challenge.

According to submissions made to the Standing Committee in Perth last week, the amount of plastic entering the ocean is expected to double by 2030 and reach 10 and 26 tonnes of plastic pollution.

Jerome Laxale MP, who launched the campaign in Federal Parliament last week, said recycling is not enough to reduce the amount of plastic pollution. Instead, people need to change the way they consume.

The Minderoo Foundation said that addressing plastic pollution in the environment requires the community to take action across the life cycle of plastics.

It starts with tackling our use of beverage cups and plastic bottles according to Zaneta Mascarenhas.

Comments attributed to Zaneta Mascarenhas MP:

“I am joining the Plastic Free July challenge and invite as many people as possible to get on board to reduce the use of single-use plastic.

“I will be making the switch from using plastic bottles and coffee cups to ones that are reusable.

“This is a simple way we can all make a difference to reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in our ocean.

“Although it does not need to stop there, and we welcome people to get in touch with our team if you have any other ideas about how you think we can reduce our reliance on single-use plastics (link to FB/website)”
